ROCHESTER, Mich. - The 1989-90 women's basketball team will enter the Oakland University Athletics Hollie L. Lepley Hall of Honor on Monday, April 18th as part of the annual Black and Gold Awards celebration, announced Co-Chairman and Senior Associate AD Padraic McMeel on Tuesday. Oakland matched the school record with 27 wins and made its second NCAA Division II Final Four appearance in 1990.
"This team is very deserving to be in our Hall of Honor," said McMeel. "We look forward to having them at the Black and Gold Awards, where our alumni and current student-athletes can celebrate each other's successes."
Head Coach Bob Taylor led the Pioneers to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) title with a 14-2 mark and the 27 wins matched the 1981-82 team that made the first-ever Final Four appearance. Oakland defeated Central Missouri State in the NCAA Regional Championship game, snapping the Jennies' 55-game home court winning streak en route to the Final Four. Debbie Delie and Ann (Serra) Lowney were named to the All-America teams. Delie was selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year, while Coach Taylor earned GLIAC Coach of the Year accolades for the first time in his career.
In addition to the 1989-90 women's basketball team, Luke Fleer and Ken McCarter were named as the George Wibby and Community Service Award recipients. Fleer, a native of Rochester, is a Regional Development Officer for Planned Giving at Oakland University. McCarter, a season ticket holder and donor, lives in Oakland Township and serves as a Special Lecturer for the Department of Organizational Leadership. Fleer and McCarter will be recognized at a home basketball game next season.
"Luke and Ken have been a big part of our unmatched success this year in Athletics," said McMeel. "We are lucky to have dedicated fans and donors such as these to help support our Ethos and student-athlete well-being."
