GOLDEN GRIZZLIES RECLAIM HORIZON LEAGUE MCCAFFERTY TROPHY

June 1, 2016

Gameday

INDIANAPOLIS - Oakland University captured back-to-back Horizon League McCafferty Trophies in record-breaking fashion after earning a league record 62 points in the current scoring format. The Golden Grizzlies finished atop the men's and women's sports standings in consecutive seasons, while winning the overall standings for the second-straight year and becoming the first team since Butler in 2010-11 to win consecutive McCafferty Trophies.

"We are very excited about repeating as the all-sports champion in the Horizon League in record-setting fashion," said Director of Athletics Jeff Konya. "We talked at the beginning of the year with our student-athletes about being process-driven and focusing on getting our culture right, the results would take of itself. It is truly remarkable to see the strides the entire athletics enterprise has made over the last two years and I commend all our staff, coaches, and student-athletes for putting in the effort and attitude to make this unprecedented success possible."

Oakland won eight Horizon League regular season and tournament championships including four Fall championships (men's and women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer), two first-time championships (women's indoor track and field, women's golf) and two repeat champions (men's and women's swimming and diving). The Golden Grizzlies recorded top-three finishes in 14 of 18 sports, including men's basketball (2nd), men's cross country (1st), women's cross country (1st), women's golf (1st), men's golf (2nd), men's soccer (1st), women's soccer (1st), men's swimming and diving (1st), women's swimming and diving (1st), women's indoor track and field (1st), men's indoor track and field (3rd), men's outdoor track and field (3rd), women's outdoor track and field (3rd) and volleyball (2nd).

Oakland's 62 overall points were the most scored by a Horizon League institution in the current scoring format and most since Notre Dame had 99 in the 1994-95 season.

Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference's first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League's 19 championship sports.

For the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.
