ROCHESTER, Mich. – For the third straight year, Oakland University Athletics has captured the Metro Series, driven by Trinity Transportation, over Detroit Mercy by a score of 20-16. The Golden Grizzlies earned points by defeating or finishing ahead of Detroit Mercy in 10-of-18 competitions this season.
“It was a very competitive year between the two institutions,” said Director of Athletics, Jeff Konya. “Credit needs to be given to all the coaches and student-athletes at both Oakland and UDM for providing the fans of both schools excellent competition. But I am glad the Cup is staying in Rochester.”
Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams swept the board at the Horizon League Championships, earning 12 of Oakland’s 20 points among the three events. Also picking up Metro Series wins were men's basketball, men's soccer, men's golf and women's golf.
This marks the third year of the Metro Series, driven by Trinity Transportation as points are awarded based on the results of each sport Oakland and Detroit compete in, with head-to-head meetings being worth two points for each contest or championship, and ties resulting in one point each. Points are awarded in head-to-head meetings regardless of when it occurs (regular season and postseason). For men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's indoor/outdoor track and field, two points are awarded to the team that finishes higher at the Horizon League Championships. In an event of a series tie, the team that won the previous year retains possession of the trophy.
