OAKLAND AD JEFF KONYA EXTENDED THROUGH 2022
ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Oakland University has announced that it has signed Director of Athletics Jeff Konya to a new five-year contract that runs through 2022. The Golden Grizzlies have captured three straight McCafferty Trophies under Konya's leadership, awarded to the Horizon League's all-sports champion.
"I am grateful to the current leadership at Oakland University for allowing me to continue to work with our tremendous student-athletes, coaches and staff with this extension," Konya said. "It is an exciting, transformative university and I look forward to our new President starting next month, Dr. Ora Hirsch Pescovitz. The best part of Oakland University is the people, and I truly believe that it is the people that ultimately define the place. We are going to keep putting the pedal to the metal with the Golden Grizzlies, and thereby keep progressing and innovating. I promise you that," Konya said.
In March 2017 the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) selected Konya as one of Under Armour's Athletic Directors of the Year for 2016-17. NACDA recognizes Athletic Directors for their commitment and positive contributions to student-athletes, campuses and their surrounding communities.
After never winning a conference all-sports title, the Golden Grizzlies have captured three straight in the Horizon League, becoming the first member school to do so in over a decade (Milwaukee, 2004-06). The McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League's 19 championship sports.
Oakland teams tallied a pair of top 26 finishes in the Learfield Directors' Cup DI-AAA Final Standings in 2015 and `16. Oakland scored a program-best 100.0 points and placed 18th in 2014-15, recording its highest finish in school history, and the highest finish among Horizon League schools.
The Golden Grizzlies have excelled in the classroom under Konya's leadership, leading the Horizon League in Academic All-League and Honor Roll selections over the last eight semesters and earned an organization-best 3.30 grade point average in the winter 2017.
With a focus on student-athlete experience, Konya implemented the Black and Gold Awards during his first year as Director of Athletics, which serves as a celebration for Oakland's 320-plus student-athletes to honor their accomplishments in competition, the classroom and in the community at the historic Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit. In 2017, for the first time, the #BGAs were televised on TV20. Some of this year's presenters included former professional hockey player and current color analyst for Detroit Red Wings Mickey Redmond, The Detroit News Tony Paul, Detroit Pistons Vice President of Public Relations Kevin Grigg, Olympia Entertainment President Tom Wilson, Fox 2 sports Woody Woodriffe, WXYZ-TV Brad Galli and Justin Rose, and WDIV-TV Jamie Edmonds.
Konya was named Oakland's Director of Athletics on July 7, 2014.
