OAKLAND AD KONYA NAMED TO NCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COMMITTEE
His three-year term will begin on Sept. 1
ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Oakland University Director of Athletics Jeff Konya has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee and his three-year term will begin Sept. 1, 2017.
"I am appreciative of the opportunity to serve the NCAA membership in this role," said Konya. "I am ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work with my fellow committee members."
Konya will be part of a ten-member committee that is charged each year with selecting, seeding and bracketing the 64-team NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship field, with a national champion crowned at the Women's Final Four, one of America's marquee women's sporting events.
Along with helping create the NCAA bracket each year and managing the championship, the committee is charged with determining the host institutions and the sites of the championship in collaboration with the Women's Basketball Oversight Committee; watching and tracking regular-season results and information for assigned conferences; participating on monthly Regional Advisory Committee conference calls; attending all required in-person meetings, subcommittee meetings and teleconferences; while also overseeing and approving selection and assignment of officials for the championship.
Konya previously worked a two-year term for the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Committee in 2013 and '14.
Konya is entering his fourth year as Oakland AD, and has led the Golden Grizzlies to three-straight McCafferty Trophies (2014-17), given to the Horizon League's all-sports champion. The Golden Grizzlies finished atop the men's sports standings and second in women's sports standings, becoming the first team since Milwaukee in 2004-06 to win three succeeding McCafferty Trophies.
For the eighth consecutive semester, Oakland led the Horizon League with 146 student-athletes meeting honor roll criteria. The Golden Grizzlies have been on the honor roll every semester since joining the Horizon League in 2013.
Oakland women's basketball finished 18-12 a season ago, posting a 12-6 record in the Horizon League. The Golden Grizzlies defeated nationally ranked Horizon League foe Green Bay in back-to-back seasons including a 74-71 win in February at home on the Blacktop. Oakland captured Mid-Continent titles in 2002 and 2006 to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Konya currently serves as the Horizon League Chair for the Athletic Directors, Chair for the Executive Council in addition to previously serving on the finance and competition committees for the conference. Konya is also the chair of the new Horizon League Council starting in August. The new governance structure of the council is made up of all 10 of the league's athletic directors, and one representative of each of the Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR), Senior Women's Administrator (SWA) and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
