Maria Rivera was named Assistant Athletic Director for Communications on Oct. 17, 2016. Rivera joined the Oakland staff after spending four years on the athletic communications team at Central Michigan.
At Oakland, Rivera will help oversee the athletic communications office, assisting with social media plans for all 18 intercollegiate sports, as well as the organization. She will work with many of the sports in the development of their communications plan to create the best way to promote each team, while providing a first-class experience for the student-athletes. Rivera will be a key contributor to graphics that are used for all Golden Grizzly social media platforms.
During her time at CMU, Rivera served as the primary contact for women's basketball, volleyball, softball, cross country, and track and field. She built content and social media campaigns for all social platforms and designed a number of the graphics used for social media and CMUchippewas.com. She managed the athletic website and focused on improving game day experience by engaging fans through social media outlets.
In 2013, Rivera assisted with the NCAA Men's Basketball Second and Third Round games, hosted by Oakland University at The Palace of Auburn Hills. There she helped with the media press work room, press conferences, and served as a media liaison for the work room.
Earned a master's degree in sports administration from Central Michigan in 2014. She received a bachelor's degree from CMU in 2011 for integrative public relations, with a minor in sport studies.
Maria (Schmidtke) Rivera is married to Dom Rivera and they reside in Rochester, Mich.
