ROCHESTER, Mich. - Vanessza Balogh and Alyssa Vela won three individual events and one relay while Nick Evans and Alex Aceino both won two individual events as the Black Team beat the Gold Team 322.5-268.5 as the Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving team held their annual Black and Gold Meet Friday night at the OU Aquatic Center.
"We had some great early season times tonight especially for how tired the team is after working so hard these last few weeks," said head swimming and diving coach Pete Hovland. "With a meet like this you look towards your leaders and I think those are the people who did really well tonight."
On the women's side, the Black Team edged out the Gold Team 154-144. The Black Team was led by Vela who won the 200 yard free (1:56.64), 100 free (54.42), 50 free (25.04) and was a member on the winning 200 medley relay with Alyssa Busch, Johanna Gustafsson and Nicole Salmeto (1:49.20). Gustafsson won the 200 breast (2:31.91) and the 100 breast (1:07.62) while Busch won the 200 back (2:10.74) and the 100 back (59.36).
The Gold Team was paced by Balogh who won the 1,000 yard free (10:15.74), 500 free (5:01.32), 200 IM (2:12.87) and was a part of the winning 400 free relay team with Sandra Czerska, Brooke Will and Bronte Stewart(3:40.21). Czerska also won the 200 fly (2:06.06) and the 100 fly (57.80). Marcella Baretta won both the 1-meter and 3 meter diving events.
On the men's side, the Black Team won by a total score of 168.5-124.5 over the Gold Team. The Black Team was led by Aceino who the 200 fly (1:56.71), 100 fly (50.48) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. The 200 medley relay consisted of Aceino, Anders Jensen, Ben Vavra and Zach Johnson (1:32.89) and the 400 free relay consisted of Aceino, Johnson, Vavra and Evans (3:11.76). Jensen won the 100 back (50.58) and the 200 back (1:50.92) and Evans won the 500 free (4:38.25) and the 200 free. Jordan Zendejaswon both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
For the Gold Team, they were led by Amr el Sayed who won the 1000 free (9:38.46), Scott Yarborough winning the 100 breast (59.14), Matyas Keresztes who won the 50 free (21.50) and Tobias Hansen who won the 200 IM (1:53.81).
Oakland will be in the pool again tomorrow as they host their annual alumni meet starting at 3:30 p.m. in the OU Aquatic Center. OU officially begins their season on Oct. 8 as they take on Michigan State and Cleveland State in East Lansing, Mich. at McCaffree Pool at IM West starting at 1 p.m.
