NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Jorden Merrilees was a part of three of the five men's winning relay teams and the women's team won the 400-yard freestyle relay as both the Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished second at the Dennis Stark Relays, hosted by Notre Dame, Friday evening at the Rolfs Aquatic Center.
"It was a good effort by both teams tonight as this is always a long, tough trip for us," said head coach Pete Hovland. "We are in heavy training right now and to come out and swim as well as we did shows that these teams are headed in the right direction and bodes well for the rest of the season."
The men's team earned 190 points good for second place behind Notre Dame who finished with 210 points. The women finished with 140 points and fell to the Fight Irish who earned 220 points.
For the men, they won the 400 medley relay with the team of Anders Jensen, Tobias Hansen, Alex Aceino and Grant Harding with a time of 3:23.96. The team of Amr el Sayed and Merrilees captured the 1,000 free with a time of 9:21.64 and the four-man team of Nick Evans, Zach Johnson, el Sayed and Merrilees won the 800 free with a time of 6:52.98. The 300 backstroke team of Jensen, Hansen and Harding won with a time of 2:30.61, while the 300 butterfly relay of Aceino, Mario Rusnak and Merrilees touched the wall first with a time of 2:31.84.
The women's 400 free team of Sandra Czerska, Vanessza Balogh, Nikki Flynn and Jill Carps won with a time of 3:33.45. The women's team earned four second-place finishes led by Alyssa Busch who swam on three of the relays while Balogh, Czerska and Karin Tomeckova swam on two second-place relays each.
The men's team will be back in the pool on Oct. 26 as they host Notre Dame in a dual meet in the OU Aquatic Center starting at 6 p.m. Both teams will face Wayne State on Oct. 27 at home as the 2012 Summit League Championship teams will be honored before the meet.
