Sullivan, Korniyenko Grab Mid-Con Accolades
Elmhurst, Ill. (Nov. 11, 2003) ???C Oakland swimmers Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.) and Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan) have been named the Mid-Con???s men???s and women???s Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 11, the Mid-Con announced Tuesday. Both swimmers helped the Golden Grizzlies go undefeated last week against Wright State and Cincinnati in dual meet action. Sullivan led Oakland last week as in defeating Wright State (126-115) and Cincinnati (144-87). Against Wright State, the junior won the 200 freestyle (1:40.74) and 100 backstroke (52.75), while finishing first in both free sprint events against Cincinnati with times of 20.35 (50) and 45.14 (100). Sullivan???s time in the 50 free is the second-fastest in the nation so far, while his time in the 100 ranks 10th. Sullivan, who also swam a leg in the winning 400 free relay (3:09.01), now holds the top spot on the Mid-Con top performances list in four categories. Korniyenko won every individual event she entered over the weekend, posting a total of four wins, and was a part of two winning relay squads. Against Wright State, the senior swam a leg in the 200 medley relay (1:48.09) and captured the 100 (57.07) and 200 (2:05.28) butterfly events. Against Cincinnati, Korniyenko won the 200 fly (2:05.38) and swam the 1000 free for the first time in her career, winning with a time of 10:35.48. Korniyenko will look to lead the Golden Grizzlies on Nov. 20th when the team hosts Toledo and Northern Michigan in dual meet action at the OU Aquatics center at 6 p.m. Both she and Sullivan will then look to help Oakland win their fifth straight Mid-Con Championship titles beginning Dec. 4th in Indianapolis, Ind.
