MACOMB, Mich. - Gino Vitella took first in the shot put once again with a hurl of 54' 4.75" and the women earned five first place finishes overall as Oakland made the short trip for the Macomb Open on Friday, Dec. 13.
"This meet was a lot of fun!" said head coach Paul Rice. "It seemed like all of the athletes were very relaxed and enjoying the experience of competing only 25 minutes from campus. This is about as close as it gets to a home meet for us during the indoor season."
For the women, Candice Mack took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.56 as well as the 200m in 26.35. To add to the list of champions on the day, Sarah Moen was first in the 60m hurdles at 9.03, Sammy Mondry won the mile in 5:21, and Katelynne Hartman threw the shot put 40' 6.75" to win the event.
On the men's side, Nick Bobek won the 60m hurdles in 8.71 having qualified for the event with an 8.61 and Chris Scott was first in the 600m with a time of 1:23.77. Jacob Bowman was strong in the mile running the event in 4:29 for a second place finish and Nick Girodat was third in the 60m dash with a 6.83 (6.80 in prelims).
"I was very happy with the overall efforts today," Rice continued. "We were missing a handful of athletes because of finals, but the ones that did compete made the most of the opportunities and I think the performances for the most part indicate right where we are. As I said last week, we still have a lot of work to do. It's only the middle of December, but we are in a really good place going into the break, and I expect everyone will come back refreshed and ready to keep making progress daily as we get into the bigger meets ahead of us in January."
Oakland next competes on Jan. 11 at the Eastern Michigan Tri Meet in Ypsilanti, Mich.
