ROCHESTER, Mich. - Head coach Paul Rice announced the addition of 25 student-athletes to the Oakland men's and women's track and field team. The men added 13 student-athletes while the women added 12 newcomers who each will look to make an immediate impact beginning with the 2014-15 indoor track campaign.

"Overall, I am very excited about the number of new athletes coming in that have the ability to contribute to our team goals as freshman," said Rice. "Many of them finished among the best in the state in their events and will add healthy competition within our program in areas we traditionally haven't had much depth."

"With the new track facility, this season will be the first time we will have a pole vault pit on campus. Adding pole vault student athletes was a priority and with the addition of Aaron Fielder and David Mittlebrun, I believe we got two of the best in around. Aaron is also a solid long jumper and will likely join CJ Gozdor in the Heptathlon.

"We also added depth to what is already one of the strongest group of sprinters in the Horizon League. Brandon Boyte was ninth in the State Final in the 100m as a junior but due to injuries, he flew under the radar his senior year," added Rice. "Jamil Banks was a last minute addition who had a strong finish to his high school career placing 13th at 100m and 200m State Final. I see both of these guys fighting for a spot on our 4 x 100m relay."

"On the women's side, the short sprint event was an area we were looking to build. Kendell Jefferson is someone who has the ability to come in and score for us in those events as a freshman. The two hurdlers, Andrea and Angela also have the talent to contribute to our team goals as immediately."

The men's team already had a strong start to the indoor season at the Mastodon Opener hosted by IPFW on Dec. 6. Bryce Stroede claimed the 3000 meter run title with a school best 8:18.82 mark earning Horizon League Runner of the Week honors for the week of Dec. 2-8. Zach Joyce finished second in the 600 meter run behind an unattached runner with a record time of 1:22.80 while Matthew Jordan made the most of his first collegiate competition taking the triple jump title with a school best mark of 43 feet, .27 inches.

The women's team also got off to a good start as Serena San Cartier claimed the 60 meter hurdle title at 8.84 while Candice Mack finished second with a 25.63 in the 200 meter dash at the EMU Holiday Meet on Dec. 5. San Carter's time of 8.84 and Mack's 25.63 rank third and fourth respectively in the Oakland women's all-time individual event records while Ashley Burr also placed third at 5:08.00 in the one mile run good for fifth in the all-time records.
