INDIANAPOLIS -- Bryce Stroede, Gino Vitella, Jacob Bowman, George O'Connor, Ashley Burr and Miranda Haas qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship East Preliminary Round held Thursday, May 25 through Saturday, May 28 at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex in Lexington, Ky. For the first time in program history, six student-athletes qualified during a single outdoor or indoor season surpassing to previous mark of four who competed last year.
Stroede and Vitella are the first student-athletes in program history to qualify three consecutive years while Burr and Haas become the first women student-athletes in program history to qualify in the 3000m steeplechase.
Stroede qualified for the 5000m with a school record time of 13:49.90 at the Virginia Challenge (Apr. 21) becoming the first student-athlete to quality for this event in consecutive seasons. He also qualified for the 10,000m for the first time since 2015 by breaking his own school record with a time of 29:37.19 at the Raleigh Relays (Mar. 24). He will only compete in the 5000m after finishing 30th in the event last season.
Vitella also becomes the first student-athlete to make a third straight NCAA appearance in the shot put after tossing a school record throw of 58 ft., 8.75 in. at the Detroit Dual (Apr. 8). He placed 44th at last season's NCAA East Preliminary.
Burr qualified after breaking her own 3000m steeplechase school record with a time of 10:18.44 to finish first followed by Haas in second with a qualifying time of 10:26.15 at the Hillsdale Last Chance Classic (May 11).
Bowman is making his NCAA debut in the 5000m and is only the second student-athlete to quality for this event after running a PR time of 13:58.75 at the Hillsdale Last Chance Classic.
O'Connor is also making his NCAA debut after qualifying in the 3000m steeplechase with a PR time of 8:52.89 at the Virginia Challenge becoming the third student-athlete to qualify for this event following Andrew Bowman in 2016.
