PEORIA, Ill. - Brittni Hutton ran a school record time of 21:09 in the women's 6k to finish fifth to lead the Oakland cross country teams at the Bradley Classic on Friday. The Golden Grizzlies finished 12th on the women's side, while the men ended the race in 14th place.
"This is always a big important week for us," said OU coach Paul Rice. "Two weeks out from The Summit League championships you are looking for a great race to set you up going into the league meet. We definitely got that today from most of our athletes. We were missing Jami Rodes today and all women stepped up and rallied together and performed extremely well. To see Brittni (Hutton) break our 9-year-old school record was absolutely amazing!
"The guys showed some nice progress today. There is still room for improvement, and you can see it's coming along for them. I am very excited to watch these athletes round into championship form over the next two weeks."
Hutton, a senior from Highland, Mich., broke a school record that was set by NCAA Championships qualifier Kristie Kieffer in 2003. She raced against seven teams that are regionally ranked.
Nathan Ziolko paced the men in the 8k with a time of 25:30 to finish in 43rd place. George O'Connor clocked a freshman record by tallying a time of 25:39 to finish in 47th place. Lia Jones battled to a 51st-place finish for the women with a time of 22:17.
The Golden Grizzlies will host The Summit League Championships on Oct. 27th on Katke-Cousins Golf Course. The race time for the women will be 10 a.m. and the men will start at 11 a.m.
