ROCHESTER, Mich. - More than 200 golfers gathered for the annual Golden Grizzlies Golf Classic presented by Plastic Engineering and Technical Services (P.E.T.S) at Katke-Cousins and R&S Sharf courses on the campus of Oakland University on Monday.
"I think the numbers speak for themselves," Director of Athletics Jeff Konya said. "We had record attendance, record revenue, great interest, filled up both courses, everybody had a great time and everyone was talking real favorably about the Oakland Golden Grizzlies so I think there were a lot of different wins today."
The 212 golfers was a record number for the event that has been in existence for more than 30 years. The annual tournament helps fund the championship drive for more than 320 Oakland University student-athletes.
"This is a tremendous event with a record number of golfers this year," Assistant AD of Development Fleetwood Fleming said. "Everybody coming in to experience everything we have to offer at Oakland University Athletics, it's been a wonderful day."
The Golden Grizzlies Golf Classic serves as a marquee event for Oakland University Athletics. The participation and support from the event directly impacts the lives of Oakland student-athletes and allows them to compete and win at the highest level.
"This event is very important to our student-athletes because there is obviously the revenue we get from the fundraising element, but there is also friendraising. I think there was a lot of friendraising going on today where some people were introduced to the Oakland product and what we do athletically, and I think they are going to come back," Konya said.
The event featured a four-person scramble format with a shotgun start. All participants received tickets to Oakland night at Comerica Park on August 9 when the Detroit Tigers take on the Pittsburgh Pirates.
