LAS CRUCES, N.M. - Left-handed pitcher Jason Hager earned his first win of the season on the mound, while Spencer Marentette and Jared Theisen drove in two runs each as the Oakland baseball team (2-3) won the opening game of a four-game set over New Mexico State (6-3), 8-3, Friday night at Presley Askew Field.

"Strong team effort tonight," said head coach John Musachio. "We did a lot of little things that made the difference. We had several big two-out hits, we were very aggressive on the bases, we played strong fundamentally sound defense, and our pitchers got ahead of their hitters."

Hager (1-0) threw 6.0 innings, giving up three earned run on five hits, and struck out four batters. The OU bullpen of Joe Buchalski, Bryan Jagielo and Logan Sparkman combined to throw 3.0 shutout innings without allowing a hit to close the game.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of third inning, the Golden Grizzlies would score five runs as Marentette drove in two runs with a hard shot to the shortstop that he was unable to handle followed by a two-RBI single by Theisen to right-center field.

NMST would add one run in the fourth and sixth inning, but OU would push its lead to 7-3 in the top of the seventh inning capitalizing on Aggie miscues. With runners on second and third, Trent Pell would score on a wild pitch followed by a Mike Brosseau run after a throwing error by the catcher. Oakland added a run in the eighth inning as Brett Impemba singled to left field to score Trent Drumheller for the 8-3 final score.

Oakland finished with eight runs, seven hits and one error. New Mexico State had three runs on five hits and four errors. NMST's Christopher Bradley suffered the loss throwing 6.0 innings, giving up five runs, none of them earned, on five hits.

The two teams will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3:05 p.m. ET at Presley Askew Field.
