ATHENS, Ohio – Spencer Marentette went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs to lead the Oakland baseball team (2-7) in a 9-2 win over Ohio (4-8) on Friday at Bob Wren Stadium. The Golden Grizzlies pitching staff of Jeff Gorecki and Russell Luxton combined for six strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.
“We had strong pitching performances today by Jeff Gorecki and Russ Luxton,” said Oakland coach John Musachio. “We also had a lot of hard-nosed at bats and did a great job of being aggressive on the bases.”
Marentette hit an RBI-single to score Trent Drumheller and cap a three-run third inning that put Oakland ahead for good. The Golden Grizzlies scored two runs on wild pitches before the base hit by Marentette.
After taking the four-run lead, the OU pitching staff settled in to a groove and retired 13 consecutive batters. A single in the ninth inning was the only base runner allowed by Luxton (1) who threw three scoreless innings of relief and struck out two batters for his first save of the season.
Gorecki (1-2) did his part by scattering seven hits, including four extra-base hits, for just two runs. The OU pitcher picked off a runner in the first inning, then threw out a runner at home in both the second and third inning to preserve the lead.
The Golden Grizzlies never let up, adding two runs in the eighth inning off of a dropped fly ball by the Ohio left fielder. OU tacked on another in the ninth, when Tim Ryan got involved in a run down to allow Todd Dunham to score from third. Ohio made four errors and six of the Oakland runs unearned.
Logan Cozart was 2-for-3 to lead Bobcats and hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was the only earned run of the game for Ohio despite outhitting Oakland 8-6. Seth Streich (0-3) suffered the loss for Ohio.
Oakland has now won back-to-back games. The Golden Grizzlies and Bobcats will continue the three game series on Saturday with first pitch at 1 p.m.
