CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Todd Dunham smashed a three-run home run and right-handed pitcher Chris Van Dyke (2-2) tossed 6.0 strong innings, allowing three runs and struck out four, to lead Oakland (4-18) to a 6-3 win over Illinois (17-7) in the final game of the four-game series at Illinois Field on Easter Sunday. Russell Luxton Jr threw 2.0 scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season.
"Our guys played aggressive, hard-nosed baseball today," said OU coach John Musachio. "Chris (Van Dyke) attacked their hitters, offensively we were committed to our approach and we stayed with the plan. Defensively we attacked the baseball and played with confidence."
Up 1-0 in the fourth inning, Brett Impemba drove in a run with a ground out to second base and Dunham connected on a three-run home run to give the Golden Grizzlies a 5-0 lead.
The Fighting Illini responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 5-3. OU added a sixth run in the eighth inning as Robby Enslen drove in a run and Luxton did not allow a hit over the final two innings.
The Golden Grizzlies will host Olivet on Wednesday in the home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm on the OU Baseball Field.
