MACOMB, Ill. - Left-handed pitcher Jason Hager (2-4) tossed a complete-game five-hitter, allowing one run and struck out four, and right-handed pitcher Jake Paulson (1-4) threw 8.0 scoreless innings, giving up three hits, to lead the Oakland baseball team (7-18, 2-0) to a sweep over Western Illinois (6-20, 0-2), 5-1 and 4-2, in Summit League action this Friday at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium. The Golden Grizzlies' starting pitchers did not allow a walk over 15.0 innings pitched.
"We played outstanding baseball today against a very talented WIU club," said OU coach John Musachio. "Jake Paulson and Jason Hager were both tremendous. Our toughness and grit really shined today as a team."
Mike Carson went 2-for-4, with a home run and two runs batted in, and Jared Theisen drove in two runs to lead the Golden Grizzlies offensively in game one. Mike Brosseau finished 3-for-3 in the nightcap, while Drew Bechtel went 2-for-3 and Robby Enslen posted a 2-for-4 performance.
The Golden Grizzlies scored four runs in the third inning of the opener, courtesy of a two-run triple by Theisen and a two-run blast by Carson as the lead was 4-0. That proved to be plenty for Hager who held the Leathernecks to five hits.
A big inning would once again prove to be enough for the Grizzlies in the second game, tallying three in the second. OU's Bechtel drove in the first run with a double and Todd Dunham followed with a RBI double to make the score 2-0. Brosseau would put Oakland up 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Paulson made that score stand up as he did not allow a run in his 8.0 innings of work. RHP Russell Luxton Jr. entered the game in the ninth inning, allowing two runs and one earned run to preserve the victory.
OU has now won eight straight versus WIU on the diamond and 13 of 14. The Golden Grizzlies will continue league play at Omaha this Sunday for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
