BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior D.J. Jarrad was 2-for-5, driving in two runs and scoring twice, to lead the Oakland University baseball team (5-12) to a 7-3 win over Bowling Green (9-15) on Wednesday at Steller Field. The Golden Grizzlies erupted for five runs in the fourth inning to take the lead and outhit BGSU 11-7.
"The pitchers did a great job for us today," said Oakland head coach John Musachio. "We were extremely aggressive on the mound, on the bases and at the plate. It was one of our best hitting performances of the year. Even our outs were good outs that put pressure on their defense or moved runners."
Sophomore Mike Carson started the Oakland rally with a home run to lead off the fourth inning. Junior Tim Ryan singled to drive in sophomore Todd Dunham with the tying run. Oakland took the lead with an RBI-single by Jarrad that brought in freshman Jake Morton. Senior Aaron Wick and Junior Aaron Cieslak also drove in runs as OU claimed a 5-2 lead.
Oakland started junior Brady Adamek (1-2) who picked up the win by scattering three hits for just one earned run and striking out two over the first three innings.
Sophomore Russell Luxton (1) pitched the final three innings to pick up his first save of the season and second of his career. Junior Jeff Gorecki also threw three solid innings for OU, striking out three batters and allowing just one hit. BGSU starter Matt Malewitz (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
Jarrad used his aggressiveness on the bases to add a key insurance run in the sixth inning. After stealing third base, Jarrad came in to score on a sacrifice foul out by Cieslak. The Golden Grizzlies stole seven bases, with Jarrad and Dunham swiping two each. Jarrad also drove in Morton with an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Cieslak was 2-for-4 and had two RBIs, while Carson finished 2-for-5. Logan Walker led BGSU with a 3-for-3 effort.
Matt Pitzulo reached on an error allowing a BGSU run to score in the first inning. Pitzulo singled in a run in the third inning to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Ryan Schlater drove in BGSU's only other run in the seventh inning.
The Golden Grizzlies will begin Summit League play on Saturday with a doubleheader at IPFW starting at 1:30 p.m. ET. The two teams will finish up the league weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
