MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Jake Morton went 4-for-6 with 4 RBIs, while Ian Yetsko finished 3-for-5 and drove in three runs as the Oakland baseball team (5-17) defeated Central Michigan (20-13), 14-8, on Wednesday at Theunissen Stadium. OU ended a 13-game losing streak with the victory.
"Our guys had their foot on the gas for all nine innings today," said coach John Musachio. "After CMU took the lead in the seventh inning, we showed our resilience and toughness. I am very proud of our boys."
Trailing 7-4 in the eighth inning, the Golden Grizzlies scored six runs to take a 10-7 lead. Yetsko hit a two-RBI single to to left-center field followed by a bases clearing double by Morton to left field. Oakland put the game away in the top of the ninth as Yetsko drove in his third run of the game with a single up the middle, then Tyler Janish hit a two-RBI single down the left-field line for the final score of 14-8.
OU led 4-0 going into the fourth inning until CMU's Morgan Oliver hit a three-run home run down the left-field line. The Chippewas took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh on four runs led by a two-RBI single by Oliver to lead 7-4.
Nate Lewis (1-1) earned the win throwing 0.2 innings in relief without allowing a run. Logan Sparkman (2) earned the save tossing 2.0 innings allowing one run on two hits. OU Starter Kendall Colvin threw 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits and struck out two batters.
Oakland finished the day with 14 runs, tying a season-high, on 15 hits and committed one error. Central Michigan scored eight runs on 13 hits with six errors. It is just the third time OU has earned a road win against CMU in program history.
The Golden Grizzlies are scheduled to play its home opener on Friday taking on UIC to begin a three-game Horizon League series at the OU Baseball Field.
