PAPILLION, Neb. - Trent Drumheller drove in the game-winning run in the ninth inning and left-handed pitcher Jason Hager (2-5) earned a no decision, scattering seven hits, two runs and struck out seven, to lead the Oakland baseball team (10-25, 5-6) to a 3-2 win over South Dakota State (19-13, 5-4) at Fricke Field on Friday.
"Solid team win today," said OU coach John Musachio. "We did a lot of little things that made the difference in the game. Jason (Hager) showed a lot of heart and battled all day to put us in position late. (Connor) Mielock made big time pitches in that critical eighth inning.
"Spencer Marentette made one of the biggest plays in the game when he executed a great read on a ball in the dirt to advance to third base which allowed Drumheller's sac fly to push across the go-ahead run. Strong defensive effort as well. Again, a very well played baseball game by our boys."
Mike Carson returned to the starting lineup and drove in a team-high two runs for the Golden Grizzlies. Spencer Marentette finished 2-for-4, while Drumheller went 1-for-3, with a walk, run scored and RBI. Connor Mielock (1-0) picked up the win in relief, recording the final two outs of the eighth inning and Russell Luxton Jr. earned his third save of the season, throwing a perfect ninth.
With the score tied at 2-2, Marentette led off with an infield single to the shortstop and advanced to second base on a successful sacrifice bunt by Mike Brosseau. Marentette would move over to third base on a wild pitch and score on a fly ball to center field by Drumheller.
OU scored three runs, on seven hits and had no errors, while SDSU scored two runs, on seven hits and had no errors.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m. ET.
