FARGO, N.D. - Kyle Bobolts went 3-for-4 and right-handed pitcher Jake Paulson (2-7) threw 6.2 strong innings, allowing four hits, two runs and fanned four, to lead the Oakland baseball team (12-28, 7-9) to a 3-2 win over North Dakota State (19-18, 6-6) in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Newman Outdoor Field. OU's Russell Luxton Jr. earned his fifth save of the season.
"We played solid baseball in game one," said OU coach John Musachio. "(Jake) Paulson was sharp and (Russell) Luxton, as usual, made big pitches in pressure situations. We had strong at bats again up and down our order, particularly (Kyle) Bobolts, who hit four line drives."
Jared Theisen drove in two of the three runs Oakland scored, finishing 1-for-3. Mike Carson went 1-for-2 with two walks to pace the Golden Grizzlies offensively. Bobolts is 5-for-6 in the series thus far.
With Oakland leading 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bison mounted a rally. Paulson got two quick outs and it looked like the Golden Grizzlies would win by two. Then back-to-back walks and an RBI single by Tim Colwell brought the Bison within one, 3-2, and put runners at first and second. Luxton then entered the game for the Grizzlies and ended the rally with a ground out to third base to preserve the win.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, the Golden Grizzlies would load the bases on an error and two walks. Theisen then drove in two runs on a single to left field as OU took the lead 2-1.
The Grizzlies would score a much needed insurance run in the seventh inning. Carson led off with a bunt single to third base and was lifted for a pinch runner. Theisen advanced the runner to second base and Robby Enslen came up with a two-out single to center field to score Brett Impemba.
OU scored three runs, on eight hits and committed one error, while NDSU scored two runs, on four hits and had two errors.
