ROCHESTER, Mich. - Todd Dunham went 5-for-10, with a triple and three RBIs, while right-handed pitcher Kevin Korkate (2-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, to lead Oakland (16-33, 11-13) to a split with Fort Wayne (22-28, 9-17) on Tuesday at the OU Baseball Field. The Golden Grizzlies dropped the opener, 8-5, and won by the mercy rule in the nightcap, 11-1, in the bottom of the eighth inning.
"Our guys did a good job bouncing back after a tough game one," Said OU coach John Musachio. "(Lucas) Scocchia set the tone on the mound with a solid effort. (Kevin) Korkate, (Jason) Hager and (Tim) Koons did a fine job out of the pen. Offensively, we had a lot of good at bats today and just couldn't break through with the big inning in game one."
Six Golden Grizzlies had two hits in game two. Robby Enslen finished 2-for-5, with a double and four RBIs. Mike Carson and Jared Theisen each drove in two runs, while Drew Bechtel went 2-for-3 and Mike Brosseau finished 2-for-4. Chris Van Dyke hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and one out to give OU the mercy-rule victory.
The Mastodons took advantage of some early mistakes by OU in game one. IPFW scored two runs in the first inning and four more in the second inning to lead 6-0. The Golden Grizzlies would score a run in the bottom half of the second and two more in third inning as the deficit was three, 6-3.
Fort Wayne would add runs in the fourth and seventh innings to take an 8-4 lead. The Golden Grizzlies mounted a come back in the bottom half of the seventh inning and brought the winning run to the plate.
Theisen led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Enslen to put runners at first and second. After a wild pitch and strike out, Trent Drumheller singled through the right side to score a run. Spencer Marentette then hit a deep fly ball to center field for the second out of the inning. Brett Impemba then earned a pinch-hit walk to load the bases with two outs. IPFW's Connor McLaughlin was able to record the final out on a strikeout to earn his third save of the season.
OU set the tone early in game two, scoring four runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. With the bases loaded, Enslen doubled off the left-center field fence to score three runs for the Golden Grizzlies.
That is all the support the Grizzlies would need as the pitchers did not allow an earned run in eight innings of work. RHP Lucas Scocchia had a no decision, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing three hits, one run and no earned runs. Korkate tossed 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and fanned two. LHP Jason Hager and RHP Tim Koons threw scoreless seventh and eighth innings for Oakland.
The Golden Grizzlies will conclude the regular season with a four-game Summit League series with Western Illinois, May 16-18. The teams will play single games on Thursday (3 p.m.) and Friday (4:30 p.m.), along with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
