2017 baseball schedule
ROCHESTER, Mich. -- The Oakland baseball team has announced its 2017 season schedule which includes a three-game series at Florida State and home-and-home games against in-state foes Central, Eastern and Western Michigan.
"Our schedule is highlighted by traveling to Florida State the first week of March to take on a very talented and well-coached Seminole team that is a perennial national power and regional team," said co-head coach Colin Kaline.
In non-conference play, Oakland will also make stops in the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Indiana and will kick-off its home opener with a three-game series against defending conference champion Wright State beginning March 31. The Golden Grizzlies will also face Central Michigan at Jimmy John's Field, home of the United Shore Professional Baseball League in Utica, Mich., on April 26 and play Milwaukee at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers, on April 30.
"The entire coaching staff has worked hard to put together a schedule that will allow our players to compete and enhance their experience as student athletes," said co-head coach Jacke Healey. "We have some very tough road games to open the year with that will be a very good test for our guys before getting into conference play.
The Golden Grizzlies will begin the 2017 season under the new regime of co-head coaches Kaline and Healey, who took over the program in July 2016, becoming the first co-head coaches in Division I. Oakland returns All-League performers Ben Hart at third base and Ryan Fitzgerald at centerfield. Zach Sterry returns for his senior season after being named a 2016 Perfect Game/Rawlings Summer Collegiate All-American Honorable Mention playing for the Waynesboro Generals in the Valley League, where he hit .350 with 13 home runs and 41 RBIs while being named the league's Most Valuable Player.
