OAKLAND ADDS MYCHAL COVINGTON TO MEN’S BASKETBALL STAFF

The former men’s basketball standout coached one of the top AAU teams in Detroit.

Mychal Covington joined the Oakland men's basketball coaching staff in August 2017. Covington played four seasons for the Golden Grizzlies from 1998-2002 and was Greg Kampe's first-ever Division I recruit.

Covington has spent the last 11 years working and coaching at Pontiac High School, Melvindale Academy for Business and Technology and Cornerstone Health and Technology High School. He also spent six years as head coach of AAU's Detroit Stars Basketball Club.

Covington played four seasons under Coach Kampe for the Golden Grizzlies. He ran the point and finished eighth in the country with 7.1 assists per game during his senior season, ending his career fifth all-time with 514 assists. Covington helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to the Mid-Con regular season title in their first-ever year of Division I competition in 1999-2000.
