ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland University men's basketball team will host Tennessee (Nov. 28) and Michigan (Dec. 10) as head coach Greg Kampe released the 2011-12 schedule on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Grizzlies will play 15 home games, which is the most in Division I history.
"This is the best schedule we have had," said Kampe. "We have the most home games we have ever had and playing seven of them in November and December is a first. We also play Michigan and Tennessee at home and that's a heck of a value for our fans. I'm very excited about this schedule."
The Golden Grizzlies will play an exhibition game against Spring Arbor (Nov. 3) inside the Athletics Center O'rena. The regular season will start with a four-game southern road swing at Alabama (Nov. 14), Arkansas (Nov. 16), Grambling State (Nov. 19) and Houston (Nov. 22).
Oakland will then begin a seven-game home stand with Utah Valley (Nov. 25) and host the Volunteers in a nationally-televised game. This will mark the first nationally-televised game inside the O'rena and the first time ESPN will be on campus to broadcast a game.
"I'm really excited for our students that we have ESPN coming to our campus for the first time in our history," said Kampe. "I know they will show up in full force to show the country what the Grizz Gang is all about."
Continuing its home stand, OU will host Ohio University (Dec. 7) before taking on in-state foe Michigan (Dec. 10) at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Rochester College (Dec. 13) will be the final contest of this home stand for the Golden Grizzlies.
The non-conference schedule will conclude with Valparaiso (Dec. 17) and Arizona (Dec. 20) on the road, along with a home game versus Western Michigan (Dec. 23). The Grizzlies will also play in the ESPN Bracket Buster game which will be held on Feb. 18.
The Summit League slate will open with newcomer South Dakota (Dec. 1) and UMKC (Dec. 3) inside the O'rena. Oakland will also host league foes Oral Roberts (Jan. 3), Western Illinois (Jan. 5), IUPUI (Jan. 7), South Dakota State (Jan. 26), North Dakota State (Jan. 28), IPFW (Feb. 11) and Southern Utah (Feb. 15).
The Summit League Championship will run March 3-6 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Tickets are now on sale for the league tournament at thesummitleague.org.
