LEMONT, Ill.-- Evan Bowser shot a 2-over-par 74 to tie for third and lead the Oakland golf team to a ninth place position through the first round of the John Dallio Memorial Tournament hosted by DePaul on Saturday. The Golden Grizzlies battled tough conditions for a team score of 312 (+24) at the 6,898 yard par 72 course at the Ruffled Feathers Golf Course.
"I don't think anyone on this team was mentally and physically prepared to play in these conditions today," said head coach Russ Cunningham. "I can prepare the team for wind, but today it was cold and windy and it affected our confidence in the morning round. Fortunately, Nick Cunningham and Evan Bowser played their last five holes 2-under-par or it would have gotten away from us,"
Despite a frost delay that prevented team from completing the second round, Bowser carded a 2-over-par 74 to tie for third despite the adverse conditions. Nick Cunningham carded a 76 in the first round, which was good enough to tie for eighth.
"The secound round could not be completed, but the afternoon scores were only slightly better," said Cunningham. "In team golf you need more than two players to show up each round but I'm confident that with a good night's sleep we will have five players ready to post a number we can all be proud of. "
The Golden Grizzlies will finish the second round before playing the final round on Sunday.
