ROCHESTER, Mich. - Matt Dudley and Alex Serwatka each netted goals to help lead the Oakland men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Rio Grande in an exhibition match at the OU Soccer Field Saturday Night.
"This is why we schedule an opponent like Rio Grande because we know its going to be a stiff test for us," said coach Eric Pogue. "We got the two goal lead but they scored a beautiful goal and really forced us to earn that victory so it was a good test for us that we need to learn from."
After a defensive battle in the opening minutes, Dudley took a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box after a penalty in the 27th minute and put it in the top-right corner of the net to give the Golden Grizzlies a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
In the opening minute of the second half, Serwatka got a loose ball and took a shot that was deflected by a Rio Grande defender and went over the goalkeeper and trickled into the net for a 2-0 advantage.
The Red Storm would cut the lead to 2-1 in the 51st minute as Craig Davies received a through ball inside the box and placed it just outside the reach of a diving Scott Messer. OU out shot Rio Grande 10-4 in the match including seven shots in the second half.
Sean Lewis made one save and did not allow a goal in the first half while Rio Grande's Jon Dodson made four saves and allowed two goals.
The Golden Grizzlies will travel to Evanston, Ill. on Aug. 20 to play their second of three exhibition matches as they take on Northwestern starting at 8:00 p.m. ET at Lakeside Field.
