Oakland Strikes 5-1 Win Over Western Illinois

ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Joey Tinnion scored twice and Lucas Diener had a goal and two assists, as Oakland (6-3-0, 2-0-0) posted a 5-1 win over Western Illinois (2-6-2, 0-1-1) in Summit League action on Saturday night at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies have scored five goals in each of their first two league matches.
"It's a great for us to get such a good result against a quality opponent like Western Illinois," said coach Eric Pogue. "We thought we started off slow, but we made some adjustments and played strong at the end of the first half and the start of the second half."
Matt Dudley opened the scoring for Oakland 30 minutes in when he got on the end of a flicked header from Kyle Bethel and directed a shot into the back of the net. The Golden Grizzlies doubled the lead less than a minute later when Diener converted a penalty kick.
An impressive goal by Tinnion made it 3-0 heading into the half. He unleashed a shot from 35 yards out that went into the upper corner of the goal. Oakland outshot WIU 14-2 in the first half and finished with a 21-8 edge in shots.
Oakland made it 4-0 with a set piece goal in the 51st minute. Diener hit an in-swinging cross and Jeff Cheslik ran onto the ball to head it into the back of the net.
The Fighting Leathernecks pulled a goal back in the 74th minute when John Brown scored on a ball that was headed along by Nathan Bruinsma. The Black and Gold responded quickly, as Tinnion chipped in a goal from the top of the 18-yard area in the 76th minute.
Oakland has now outscored Summit League opponents 10-1 while going undefeated through the first two league matches.
The Golden Grizzlies will open a three-game road swing Wednesday with a derby match against Detroit at Titan Field set to kickoff at 3 p.m.
