ELMHURST, Ill. -The Oakland men's soccer team was tabbed for a third place finish in the 2012 Summit League Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league coaches and released on Friday. The Golden Grizzlies garnered 38 points and two first place votes.
"Our program doesn't place much emphasis on the preseason rankings, no matter where we are picked," said head coach Eric Pogue. "We all know it's where you end the season that matters the most. Only our play on the field can determine where we end up."
The Golden Grizzlies had the second-highest ammount of first place votes in the league, but were third based on accumulation of points. Defending champions Western Illinois were picked first with 46 points and five first place votes, while Kansas City was second with 39 points and one first place vote.
Oral Roberts was picked fourth with 28 points, followed by IUPUI (23) in fifth. Fort Wayne (20) took sixth in the poll, with Eastern Illinois (18) seventh and Omaha (8) eighth.
"Our goal as a team is to win The Summit League and return to the NCAA Tournament and I think this team can do it," added Pogue. "Our conference is loaded with hard-nosed, competitive teams that will make every match a challenge."
Oakland hosts Bowling Green in a home exhibition match at 4 p.m. on Friday and will end preseason competition on Sunday at Butler. The Golden Grizzlies have won 11 league titles during their first 13 seasons as members of The Summit League.
