ROCHESTER, Mich. The Oakland men's soccer team opens the 2015 season with a home opening match against Western Illinois Friday, August 28 at 7 p.m. followed by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) on Sunday, August 30 at 3 p.m. at the Oakland Soccer Field. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with the voice of the Golden Grizzlies Neal Ruhl on the call. The SIUE match is also part of Club Day where all local soccer club members eighth grade and below receive free admission.

EXHIBITION RECAP: Oakland finished the exhibition season with a 1-1-1 record against some tough competition. After a 4-1 setback at No. 25 Akron (Aug. 18), in which Vittorio Sbrocca scored his first collegiate goal, the Golden Grizzlies played No. 18 Louisville (Aug. 22) to a scoreless draw as Wes Mink collected five saves facing 13 shots to preserve the shutout. Oakland welcomed back former assistant coach Andy Wagstaff who was announced as the new head coach for SVSU over the summer. The Golden Grizzlies notched a 2-0 win (Aug. 24) as Blake Barribeau and Alex Serwatka each scored goals while Eliott Tarney recorded six saves in the shutout effort.

OPPONENT BREAKDOWN: Western Illinois closed out its exhibition season with a 0-1-1 record with a loss to DePaul (3-2) and draw versus Northern Illinois (1-1). WIU posted a 9-7-3 overall record in 2014 and tied for first in Summit League play with a 3-2-1 mark. The Leathernecks return seven starters led by junior Jacob Bevan with nine points (4G, 1A) last season.

SIUE went 2-1 in exhibition play with wins at Tulsa (2-0) and Milwaukee (2-0) and loss to Xavier (1-0). The Cougars won the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Championship in 2014 and were selected to finish first in the 2015 MVC preseason poll with returning senior Justin Bilyeu and junior Austin Ledbetter named to the All-MVC preseason team.

COACHING ADDITIONS: The Golden Grizzlies added two new coaches to reigning Horizon League Coach of the Year Eric Pogue's staff. Armen Tonianse joins the staff after being a part of the Springfield Demize of the PDL. Steve Seargeant returns to Oakland as a volunteer coach after spending over 20 years as an assistant under both Pogue and Gary Parsons.
