ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland hosts both Michigan State and Purdue in addition to playing at Connecticut, as part of the 2012-13 women’s basketball schedule, which was released by head coach Beckie Francis on Thursday. The Golden Grizzlies play a challenging schedule that includes 16 home games at the Athletics Center O’rena.
“I think that our fans will be really excited to see Big Ten schools like MSU and Purdue play us at the O’rena,” said Francis. “Our home schedule is great and with the team that we’ll put on the floor, I think our fans will be very entertained.”
The Golden Grizzlies take on Michigan State at the O’rena on December 5 and Purdue on December 16. The women’s basketball season opens against George Mason (Nov. 9), followed by American (Nov. 12) and Buffalo (Nov. 16). The Golden Grizzlies also host Western Michigan (Dec. 1), UM-Dearborn (Nov. 26) and Rochester College (Dec. 21) as part of the non-league schedule.
Oakland faces one of the more prominent teams in women’s basketball, with a trip to Connecticut on December 19. The Huskies made it to the NCAA Final Four last season.
“There is no doubt that UConn is a storied program in women’s basketball,” said Francis. “We hope that our fans will circle that day on the calendar to see our team go up against some of the best that college basketball has to offer."
OU travels to the state of New York three times this season, including a trip to the Big Apple to take on Manhattan (Dec. 8). The Black and Gold also have games at Canisius (Nov. 20) and Niagara (Nov. 25).
“Every non-league game that our team plays is designed to make us better,” said Francis. “I our non-league opponents will help us get ready to face The Summit League.”
The Summit League schedule begins in December with a visit from Western Illinois (Dec. 28) and IUPUI (Dec. 30). Oakland hosts home league games against South Dakota State (Jan. 10) and North Dakota State (Jan. 12).
League newcomer Omaha visits the O’rena for the first time on February 2. OU hosts South Dakota (Feb. 14) and Kansas City (Feb. 16), before wrapping up the home portion of the league schedule against IPFW on Senior Day, February 23.
“Our main focus each year is on The Summit League,” said Francis. “We want to do our best during league play to put ourselves in a great position heading into the championship tournament. I think this schedule allows us to do just that.”
The Summit League Women’s Basketball Championship runs from March 9-12 and is hosted at Sioux Falls Arena in Soux Falls, S.D.
