ROCHESTER, Mich. – Andrea Williams and Shay Lewis have joined the Oakland women’s basketball staff announced head coach Jeff Tungate on Wednesday. Williams will serve as an assistant coach while Lewis will be the director of basketball operations.
"We are really excited to have Andrea join our team. She has incredible experience and brings great energy and enthusiasm to our program,” said Tungate. “She has coached at the highest levels of collegiate basketball and has great knowledge of the game. She will fit in extremely well with the ethos of Oakland University Athletics, as well as the culture we have created in our women's basketball program."
Prior to joining the Golden Grizzlies staff, Williams spent one year coaching at Fort Wayne and the previous five seasons as head coach at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., winning more games in her first season than the Falcons’ previous two seasons combined. Her Air Force teams would go on to win the program’s first Mountain West Conference (MWC) in four years and second overall in program history. They also went on to set NCAA Division I records in points scored, rebounds, field goal percentage, three-point field goal percentage, assists, free throws made and free throws attempted.
“I am thrilled to join Jeff Tungate's staff here at Oakland. I was really impressed with him last season when Fort Wayne faced his team at the O’rena,” said Williams. “This is a top notch women's basketball program and staff. I am excited and look forward to working with and mentoring the young women who are a part of this team. It is a great time to be a part of the Oakland University culture and I am thankful that coach wanted me to be a part of this program. We are on a journey to win the Horizon League.”
Williams received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Edinboro (Pa.) in 1994. As a student-athlete, she helped lead Edinboro to two NCAA Tournament appearances during her two seasons and spent two seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater helping the team to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 1996-97.
Prior to joining the staff at Oakland, Lewis served as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Rochester College and was the head coach for the girls’ varsity team at Rochester Adams High School.
"This is a great hire for us and our women's basketball program as I have known Shay for many years,” added Tungate. “She is a person of great integrity, a strong work ethic and a deep understanding of what it takes to be part of a successful program. With her local ties, I know she will do a great job of promoting our program throughout the community."
Lewis was also the Assistant Athletic Director at Detroit PAL overseeing recreational, school and travel soccer leagues while assisting with all sports leagues and programs provided by the organization.
“I'm thrilled to join the women's basketball program at Oakland,” said Lewis. “Being from Rochester, I've been a big fan of the positive culture and competitive program Coach Tungate and his staff are building. I'm extremely excited to be a part of the Golden Grizzly family and want to thank him for this special opportunity.”
Lewis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in radio, TV and film from Wayne State in 1998 along with Master of Arts in Sports Administration in 2011. As a student-athlete at Wayne State, Lewis was a four-year basketball letterwinner and was named All-GLIAC first team in 1998. In 2007, she was voted to the Best 25 Women’s Basketball Players in WSU history list.
