ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland women's basketball team kicks off the 2017-18 campaign against Illinois State for the home opener on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 pm. The game will be broadcast live from the Blacktop at the O'rena on ESPN3 with Brad Golder on the call.
Series History: Oakland is 2-1 all-time against the Red Birds with the Golden Grizzlies wining the last meeting in overtime, 73-71, on Dec. 10, 2005.
Returning Firepower: The Golden Grizzlies return seniors Cierra Bond, Taylor Gleason, Sha’Keya Graves, Leah Somerfield and Korrin Taylor along with Horizon League Sixth Player of the Year Taylor Jones who led the team in scoring last season (15.3 ppg).
Gleason led the team in three-pointers (46), ranked second in scoring (11.7 ppg) and assists per game (3.0) (which both ranked 14th in the league), fourth in steals per game (2.1) and sixth in three-point percentage (37.7). Somerfield ranked third on the team in scoring (11.1 ppg) which was 17th in the league. She also was 10th in field goal percentage (48.2), 11th in rebounding (6.6) and 13th in 3-point percentage (33.3%) while recording four double-doubles on the season for the first time in her career.
Fresh Faces: The Golden Grizzlies will have five new players looking to make an immediate impact starting with junior college transfer Mercy Agwaniru who looks to compete for time after being redshirted last season. Freshmen Myka Cromwell, Autumn Kissman, Carah Burdette and Chloe Guingrich also will look to add depth.
