HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Morgan Smith was named Horizon League Player of the Year and Alyssa Gaudio was named coach of the year for the second straight year announced by the league office Saturday night. Fiona Schmidt was also a First-Team All-Horizon League selection.
Smith, a senior from Muskegon, Mich., becomes the second Oakland golfer in three seasons to be named player of the year (Elle Nichols, 2015) and earns her second straight all-league honor. In eight tournaments, she recorded six top-5 finishes including placing runner-up at the Benbow Invite on March 7. She ranked second in the league with a stroke average of 76.58.
Schmidt, a junior from Hofheim, Germany, placed inside the top-10 in seven of eight tournaments this season and ranked fifth in the league in stroke average of 77.75. Her highest finish was at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational on April 9 where she placed runner-up.
Gaudio, in her third year at the helm of the women’s golf program, earns her second straight coach of the year award after helping the Golden Grizzlies win three tournaments on the season. This year, Oakland did not finish lower than fourth-place in a tournament.
The Oakland women’s golf team will look to defend its league title April 23-25 at the 2017 Horizon League Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
