INDIANAPOLIS - Sophomore Kara Weber scored the match-winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to propel the Oakland University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Butler on Friday at the Butler Bowl. The come-from-behind victory puts the Golden Grizzlies' record at 4-4-1, while the Bulldogs drop to 2-7 with the loss.
"It was a great team effort," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "We played nearly every player that we had with us and almost everyone played well. It was especially nice to win on a set play."
After falling behind early, Oakland sophomore Marlen Knoph tied the game with her third goal of the season. Sophomore Nicole DeLuca started the play when her shot was saved by the Butler goalkeeper, but Knoph was the quickest to react and put in the rebound to make it 1-1.
Weber's match-winner came in the 86th minute when the OU defender came forward on a corner kick. Senior Dani Haelewyn drove in a mid-range cross that Weber volleyed into the net for her third goal of the season. The comeback win was the first of the season for Oakland, which is now 2-0-1 against Horizon League opponents this season.
Butler out shot Oakland 6-3 in the first half and took the lead in the 13th minute. Jackie Hafele was able to redirect an Olivia Colosimo corner kick into the Oakland goal for her first goal of the year.
Despite being out shot early, the Golden Grizzlies earned the edge in quality chances and ended the game with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, despite being outshot 12-10 overall.
"It was a tough game with it being a very windy day on a turf field, which led to some hard-to-judge bounces," added O'Shea."But our players adjusted well. Overall I think it was a good performance all-around."
Sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Coley had four saves, including one breakaway stop to pick up the win for Oakland. Her counterpart, Olivia Walter, made three stops for Butler.
The Golden Grizzlies are now unbeaten in their last four matches and will look to carry that momentum into conference play, which starts with their next game against North Dakota State on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ultimate Soccer Arenas. As part of the conference weekend, the team will also host South Dakota State on Sunday at the OU Soccer Field. Live stats for both games will also be provided on OUGrizzlies.com.
