OMAHA, Neb. – Abigail Haelewyn scored the only goal of the match to lead Oakland (4-3-3, 1-0) to a 1-0 win over Omaha (1-11-0, 1-1) on Sunday to kick off Summit League play at the UNO Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies outshot the Mavericks 13-9.
The match-winner came in the 16th minute, when Meghan Reynolds passed the ball to Haelewyn who fired in a shot from 14 yards out. It was the first goal of the season for Haelewyn who is among the NCAA leaders in assists.
Shannon Coley made five saves to earn her third shutout of the year. She moves into a tie for the 12th in career shutouts in Summit League history and is along in fourth place for career shutouts at OU.
The Golden Grizzlies had a number of shots blocked and despite outshooting the Mavs, saw a deficit of 4-5 in the number of shots on goal.
"We won 1-0, but we did not play well." surmised O’Shea. “We need to play harder if we expect to get results next weekend,”
Oakland will host North Dakota State in its next match on Friday at 7 p.m. at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies will also host South Dakota State on Sunday. OU defeated both SDSU and NDSU in the semifinals and finals of last year’s Summit League Tournament, respectively.
