FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Early goals by Abigail Haelewyn and Marlen Knoph weren't enough as Oakland (7-5-3, 4-2) lost, 3-2, to Fort Wayne (8-6-1, 4-1-1) on Saturday at the Hefner Soccer Complex. The Golden Grizzlies are now tied for second in The Summit League standings behind the league-leading Mastodons.
"This is a very disappointing result," said head coach Nick O'Shea. "We played great for 25 minutes, then Fort Wayne stepped up the intensity and we didn't respond. Little things make a difference in games and after 25 minutes Fort Wayne did all the little things right."
Haelewyn put OU in front less than eight minutes into the match. Nicole DeLuca slotted a pass across the penalty area to Haelewyn who tapped it home for her third goal of the season.
A smart pass from Brianne Horne and a good finish into the upper corner by Knoph made it 2-0 Oakland in the 28th minute. The Golden Grizzlies poured on the early pressure with DeLuca also beating the goalkeeper with a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced out.
The match turned in the 35th minute when Arianne Mason scored on a far post shot on an assist from Sydney Hoareau. Less than four minutes later IPFW leveled the match on a goal from Hoareau assisted by Mason. The two teams were tied 2-2 at the half.
With the momentum of the two late goals, Fort Wayne continued to apply the pressure by outshooting Oakland 9-3 in the second half. The pressure paid off with the match-winning goal in the 57th minute when Danielle Bishop scored on a one-on-one opportunity.
Goalkeeper Shannon Coley made five saves for OU as the Mastodons had a 15-9 edge in shots and an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. IPFW's Sam Pavlika made one save.
"Hopefully our players will learn that soccer is a physical game and play with intensity in the future.," concluded O'shea.
The Golden Grizzlies close out the regular season over the weekend with matches against IUPUI and Western Illinois at the OU Soccer Field. The weekend kicks off with OU hosting IUPUI at 7 p.m. on Friday.
