ROCHESTER, Mich. -- A total of 10 home matches, including three against Big Ten opponents, highlight the 2012 Oakland women's soccer schedule, released by head coach Nick O'Shea on Thursday. The Golden Grizzlies also have a match scheduled at Notre Dame.
Oakland has set forth a challenging home schedule that includes matches with Michigan State (Sept. 5), Michigan (Sept. 9) and Northwestern (Sept. 16). The Golden Grizzlies also host local rivals Detroit (Aug. 31) and Rochester College (Aug. 17). In addition, Loyola (Md.) will visit the OU Soccer Field on Aug. 26 for a first-ever meeting between the two programs.
OU will also be tested on the road before the start of the league play. The Golden Grizzlies play at three-time NCAA national champions Notre Dame (Sept. 23). The Black and Gold also play at Eastern Michigan (Aug. 19) and Northern Kentucky (Sept. 14).
Oakland will play eight Summit League matches this season. OU hosts North Dakota State (Oct. 5) in a rematch of last season's Summit League Championship match. The Golden Grizzlies also take on Summit League semifinalists South Dakota State (Oct. 7) at the OU Soccer Field. The team will host IUPUI (Oct. 26) and Western Illinois (Oct. 28) in the final two matches of the regular season.
The defending Summit League champions, Oakland begins league play on the road against league newcomers Nebraska-Omaha (Sept. 30). OU also plays consecutive road matches against league foes UMKC (Oct. 12), South Dakota (Oct. 14) and IPFW (Oct. 20).
The top four league teams will advance to The Summit League Championship on Nov. 2-4. The tournament is hosted by SDSU at Fishback Soccer Complex in Brookings, S.D.
The 2011 Golden Grizzlies won six consecutive matches, including two in The Summit League Championship, to claim the program's seventh Summit League championship and advance to NCAA Division I Tournament for the sixth time in the school's history. OU has claimed a league-best 15 Summit League championships (8 regular season, 7 tournament) under O'Shea.
