INDIANAPOLIS -- Oakland was picked to finish fourth in the 2017 Horizon League women's soccer preseason poll, as announced by the league office on Monday and voted on by the league's 10 head coaches. The Golden Grizzlies earned 66 points overall.
"At every conference I have coached, preseason polls usually reflect the previous season standings, so it makes sense for us to be placed in the no. 4 spot," Head Coach Juan Pablo Favero said. "Our sole focus is on becoming the best team we can be and we are off to a good start thanks to the effort and teamwork the ladies have shown these first two weeks."
The Golden Grizzlies finished in fourth place a season ago with a 9-10-1 record, 5-4-0 in Horizon League play. Oakland bowed out of the Horizon League tournament in the quarterfinals.
Northern Kentucky, the 2016 Horizon League tournament champions, and Milwaukee, who finished runner-up in the tournament, finished in first place with five first place votes and 86 points.
Oakland opens the season at home on August, 18 against Bowling Green at 7 p.m.
