Box Score Macomb, Ill. (Oct. 9, 2005) ???C Oakland???s women???s soccer team found itself in a 3-0 hole versus Western Illinois Sunday in the squad???s Mid-Continent Conference opener, then got two goals from senior Kristi Swaving (Albuquerque, N.M.) mid-way through the second period to close the gap. The Westerwinds, however, held on to defeat the Golden Grizzlies 3-2. ???We made a few tactical errors today that cost us the early goals and we just couldn???t get out of the hole,??? head coach Nick O???Shea said. ???We created several good chances though, and moved the ball well today.??? Two of WIU???s goals came in the opening nine minutes of the contest as Kelly Warner scored at 7:02 and Robyn Ruypers sent one in past OU keeper Jessica Howard???s (West Bloomfield, Mich.) reach just over a minute and a half later. The Westerwinds would take that 2-0 lead into halftime. Andrea Fernandez netted what would prove to be the game-winner in the 53rd minute, taking a pass from Katelyn Wisner and sending the ball into the back of the net. The Golden Grizzlies turned up the pressure and were finally able to capitalize on one of their nine shots on goal at 71:32. Swaving got a breakaway and cut to the side for the shot. Western goalkeeper Loes Geurts got a piece of the ball, but Swaving was there for the rebound and made her second shot count for her seventh goal of the season. Just one minute later, Swaving netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Kristi Evans (Mason, Mich.) made a nice pass to Marianne Samdal (Tiller, Norway), who did a lot of hard work and beat a WIU defender on the left side, forcing Geurts out of the net. When Samdal realized Swaving was all alone on the opposite side, she chipped it over and Swaving notched the easy goal. Swaving had another golden opportunity in the final minute to tie things up, but Geurts was there to make the diving save and secure the win for Western. Oakland is now 4-6-1 for the season and 0-1-0 in the Mid-Con. Howard had four saves in the match and the Golden Grizzlies outshot the Westerwinds 15-9. Swaving led the team with six shots on goal, while Evans had one and Jill Horan (Tipperary, Ireland) recorded two. The Grizzlies return home to host three straight in a week???s span.
