Despite a goal from junior Marianne Samdal
(Tiller, Norway) in the 16th minute to tie the game, Oakland was unable to take down Oral Roberts as the Golden Eagles came back to score the winning goal in the second half. The Golden Grizzlies recorded 13 shots on goal in the game ???C more than double ORU???s production. However, the visitors made two of their six count for the win.
Jessica Kellogg put the Golden Eagles on the board first when she gained control of a loose ball and sent it into the left side of the net from the right corner of the goal box at 9:47. Less than a minute later, OU???s Kristi Evans
(Mason, Mich.) blasted a shot at the goal, but it just missed the right post.
Oakland knotted the match at 15:47 when Evans connected with Samdal who zipped the ball into the goal from six yards out. In the 20th minute, Kristi Swaving
(Albuquerque, N.M.) had a chance to give OU a 2-1 lead when she drilled a shot toward the ORU goal, but her shot nicked the left post and was then cleared by the Oral Roberts defense. Both teams had a couple more chances before the break, but the score remained 1-1 heading into halftime.
Oral Roberts had a few missed opportunities at the start of the second period, but Oakland once again had a chance to take the lead as well. Silje Peltopera
(Karasjok, Norway) had an excellent shot at the goal at 58:51 as she beat her defender for a one-on-one with ORU goalkeeper Shelbi Morrison, but her shot banged off the crossbar and out of play. The Golden Grizzlies had several more chances mid-way through the half, but the Golden Eagle defense stepped in to make the team saves.
At 76:42, Sarah Rencken gave ORU the one-goal lead when she snuck in a free kick from beyond the box. Samdal and Peltopera had one more shot apiece, but Morrison came up with the stops to secure the win for Oral Roberts. Morrison finished with seven saves, while the team chipped in with five. Oakland keeper Jessica Howard
(West Bloomfield, Mich.) fended off two shots and the OU defense came up with two more.
Today marked the final home match for seniors Silje Peltopera and Kristi Swaving.
