The Oakland University Golden Grizzlies women's soccer team clinched third place in the Mid-Con Conference standings with a 3-0 win over IUPUI in Indiannapolis, Friday. Oakland finishes conference play with a 3-2 record and improves their overall record to 7-10.
Junior Beth Howson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) tallied two head goals to lead Oakland to the 3-0 win. Howson opened up the scoring at the 39 minute mark off a cross from freshman Silje Moen (Tromso, Norway) where she headed the ball into the back of the net. Just two minutes later, Howson's head would connect with the ball once again - this time off of a corner kick taken by junior Erica Demers (Welland, Ont.) to score her third goal of the season.
With only five minutes left in play, freshman forward Kristi Swaving (Albuquerque, New Mexico) scored her eighth goal of the season off a pass from fellow freshman Leah Cherf (Grosse Pointe, Mich.). Cherf's pass gave Swaving a breakaway on which she capitalized to give the Grizzlies a final score of 3-0.
Oakland outshot IUPUI 21-3 and had eight unanswered corner kicks. Recording the shutout for Oakland was goalkeeper Sarah Buckland (Jr./Burlington, Ont.).
With all of Friday's matches, Mid-Con seedings are now set and the teams who will compete in the conference championships decided.
