Rochester, Mich. (Nov. 5, 2004) ???C
In the Mid-Continent Conference Women???s Soccer Tournament opening semifinal match Friday, it came down to penalty kicks after four scoreless periods. Amidst some confusion on the field during the penalty kicks after an Oral Roberts goalie substitution, the Golden Eagles managed to put three-of-five in the net, while Oakland connected on just two of its kicks by Kristi Swaving
(Albuquerque, N.M.) and Susann Kamrud
(Trysil, Norway). The Golden Grizzlies??? season ended with a final record of 8-11-1, while ORU advances to the championship game on Sunday with a record of 13-5-1.
(St. John's, Newfoundland) came up with the first shot on goal of the day mid-way through the first half, but Oral Roberts goaltender Stef Gurley came up with the stop. With 10 minutes to go in the period, ORU???s leading scorer Jessica Kellogg blasted a shot at the Golden Grizzlies??? net that barely caught the crossbar and bounced out of play. Neither team was able to gain any offensive momentum for the rest of the half and the teams entered the break tied at zero.
Oakland came out firing in the second stanza, outshooting the Golden Eagles 9-6. Less than 10 minutes in, it looked as though Kali Karibo
(Rochester Hills, Mich.) had a chance to put a point on the board for OU, but Oral Roberts??? defense moved in to make the stop before her shot even made it near the ORU keeper???s reach.
The offensive pressure continued on both sides of the field with three Golden Grizzlies taking shots at the net within a minute of each other mid-way through the half. Oral Roberts seemed relentless as well with Kellogg booting two shots alone in the final 18 minutes of regulation, one of which was snatched up by Oakland net minder Jessica Howard
(West Bloomfield, Mich.) with the other one sailing above the crossbar. With just over eight minutes to go, Swaving made a bee-line for the goal, moved the ball past her defender and Gurley for an open look, but her shot from the right side of the net nicked the post and rolled out of bounds.
With neither team able to score at the end of 90 minutes of action, the match entered the first overtime of the afternoon. Swaving registered the only shot of the period, though Gurley was there for the save to keep the Golden Eagles alive.
In the second overtime, Oral Roberts seemed to have the edge with Kellogg taking two cracks at the goal. However, one flew high of the net and Howard scooped up the second for her third save of the match to bring her season total to 114. Again, neither squad came up with a goal, forcing the match to be decided by penalty kicks.
Swaving struck first for the Golden Grizzlies, followed by a make by Gentry Detter from ORU. Each team then missed the second shot, followed by a score from OU???s Kamrud and one from Randi Christenson of Oral Roberts. Then, in a questionable move, the Golden Eagles substituted at the keeper position with Mandy Evans coming in for Oakland???s next shot by Christan Wasniewski, which missed. Once the officials determined that the substitution was legal due to an injured Gurley, ORU???s Tayah Schroter-Gillespie stepped up and scored the team???s third penalty kick. With one last chance, Courtney McCracken
???s (Farmington Hills, Mich.) shot came up short, so Oral Roberts advanced to the championship match, which will be at 1:00 pm Sunday, Nov. 7.
