INDIANAPOLIS -- The Oakland women's soccer team (11-5-3) will face No. 4 seed Ohio State (16-4-1) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, as announced during the NCAA selection show on Monday. The back-to-back Summit League Champion Golden Grizzlies will face the Big Ten Champion Buckeyes at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Saturday at 5 p.m.
"First off, we're very happy to be in the tournament," said Oakland head coach Nick O'Shea. "We're also glad to be close enough to home that our friends, family and fans can come out to watch the match. We're looking forward to their support."
The Golden Grizzlies were The Summit League regular season and tournament champions, earning their seventh NCAA Tournament appearance. Oakland went through the league tournament without conceding a goal and has posted four consecutive shutouts.
The Buckeyes finished second in the Big Ten regular season standings, before winning the tournament title. Ohio State, which has won a school record nine consecutive matches, is also making its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance.
"It's going to be a tough match anytime you face the Big Ten champions," said O'Shea. "We're very excited to play further into the postseason and we gain valuable experience every time we play a quality opponent in this sort of match."
