CHICAGO - Erin Kownacki tossed 4.0 innings allowing only two hits with a run and strikeout as No. 6 Oakland fell to No. 3 Valparaiso in a rain shortened five inning game on Wednesday night to open 2017 Horizon League Tournament play at Flames Field on the campus of UIC.
After a three hour rain delay, Valpo's Gabby Magnifico hit a solo home run to put the Crusaders ahead 1-0 in the second inning.
Kelsie Swanson recorded Oakland's lone hit in the fifth inning and advanced to second base off a wild pitch. However, the Golden Grizzlies could not hit her in to tie the game.
Heavy rains then hit the Chicago area forcing the game to be called.
Oakland will face arch-rival and No. 5 seed Detroit Mercy in an elimination game on Thursday, May 11 at 1 p.m. ET.
