OAKLAND LANDS FOUR PLAYERS ON ALL-HORIZON LEAGUE TEAMS

- Five Oakland softball student-athletes earned Horizon League postseason honors announced by the league office on Tuesday. Jamie Squires and Lyndsay Hill were named First Team All-League while Erin Kownacki and Mikayela Marciniak received Second Team All-League honors. Squires was also named Co-Freshman of the Year along with earning All-Freshman Team accolades.

Squires, from Canton, Mich., started all 44 games at shortstop. She leads the team in batting (.347) and home runs (6) which ranks eighth in the league, RBI (27), and slugging percentage (.612) which rank fourth and runs (16) at sixth. Squires also led the league in total bases (58), ranked second in average (.417), RBI (25), slugging percentage (.806), triples (3), third in doubles (7), fourth in on base percentage (.494), hits (30) and total bases (38) in conference-only stats. She recorded a career-high four RBI at Cleveland State (Apr. 4).

Hill, a senior from Midland, Mich., was recently named to the 2017 Horizon League Softball All-Academic Team. She leads the team in runs (21) which is fifth in the league, tied for second on the team in triples (2), third in hits (38), fourth in RBI (12) and fifth in batting (.270). Her 18 runs scored and .351 average in conference play ranks eighth and 10th respectively. She was named Horizon League Player of the Week after leading Oakland to a perfect 6-0 league mark for the week (Apr. 10) hitting a blistering .688 with 11 hits, seven RBIs, seven runs scored, a home run, two triples, two doubles and 1.250 slugging percentage. Hill also recorded four RBIs nearly hitting for the cycle with a home run, triple and single against Green Bay (Apr. 9).

Kownacki, a senior from Armada, Mich., returned to form after missing last season due to a medical condition. She ranks second in the league in ERA (1.71), third in opponent batting average (.232), fourth in strikeouts (93) and wins (13) and fifth in innings pitched (143.1). She also leads the team in complete games (15) and shutouts (3). Kownacki was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for consecutive weeks after tossing a complete game shutout against Boston University with two strikeouts in her season debut followed by a complete game shutout with four strikeouts against Ball State while picking up her first career save with two strikeouts in Oakland's 7-4 extra inning win over Morgan State (Feb. 25).

Marciniak, a sophomore from Canton, Mich., was recently named to the 2017 Horizon League Softball All-Academic Team. She ranks fourth in the league in RBI (20) and ninth in hits (26) in conference-only statistics. She is second on the team lead in batting (.331) and triples (2) while leading the team in hits (45), doubles (10) and ranking second in home runs (3). Marciniak recorded four RBIs against NKU (Apr. 2) and Valparaiso (Apr. 28) and has tallied 12 multiple hit games.

Oakland enters the 2017 Horizon League Tournament as a No. 6 seed and will play No. 3 seed and defending champion Valparaiso on Wednesday, May 10 at 3:30 p.m. on the campus of host UIC.
