ORLANDO, Fla. -- Juliana Guevara won her singles match to clinch a 6-1 win for Oakland (1-2) over Webber International (0-3) on Monday at the Star Island Resort. The Golden Grizzlies won four of the five singles matches in straight sets.
"I'm happy with how our team played," said head coach Heather Redshaw. "We've hit outside for a couple of days now and our players are getting used to the conditions. It was good experience for when we play Summit League matches outdoors."
Emily Raidt and Tamara Blum secured the doubles point for Oakland with a dominant 8-1 win over Julia Stojkovska and Laura Novak at No. 2 doubles. In the other doubles match, Guevara and Karine Celis faced a 1-4 deficit early, but managed to force a tiebreaker. The Oakland tandem dominated the tiebreaker 7-1, claiming the match 8-7.
Singles play started well for Oakland, as Cam Sabourin quickly dispatched her opponent, Holly Parnell, 6-0, 6-0. That allowed Guevara to seal the victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Chandler Reed. Blum won her match at No. 3 singles over Nathalia Chaddad, 6-3, 6-2.
Celis picked up a win at No. 2 singles, beating Novak 6-0, 6-3. The Warriors forfeited matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Stojkovska had the lone victory for WIU, beating Raidt 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Oakland returns to action on Wednesday for a match at Florida Atlantic at 1 p.m.
