FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Caitlin Young and Brittany Baxter played a close match at No. 2 doubles, but the Oakland women’s tennis team (1-12, 0-3) lost 4-0 to IPFW (13-9, 5-1) on Friday in Summit League play at Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness. The match was moved indoors due to inclement weather in the Fort Wayne area.
“IPFW is a really tough team and they played very well,” said Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw. “Our doubles play was better today and Brittany was playing well in her second set. We are hoping to put in a good performance in our final match tomorrow.”
The Golden Grizzlies battled in doubles against the defending Summit League champions. Young and Baxter eventually fell 8-5 in a tight contest at No. 2 doubles. In the No. 1 doubles match Demi Georgakopoulos and Grace Keating fell 8-2 as the Mastodons claimed the 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles point.
At No. 1 singles Young played the closest match, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Anita Henestrosa. Keating dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles. IPFW won all three singles matches in straight sets and clinched the match 4-0. Baxter was still on the court when the match was called, but after dropping her first set she battled back to tie the second set 2-2 when things ended.
Oakland will wrap up the Summit League Cluster on Saturday with a match against South Dakota. The match is currently scheduled to be played at Concordia Lutheran at 1 p.m. However, weather conditions may dictate that the match be moved indoors.
