INDIANAPOLIS -- Demi Georgakopoulos, Grace Keating and Abbey Bates came away with singles wins, as he Oakland women's tennis team (1-16) dropped a pair of Summit League matches, 6-1 to Southern Utah (7-8, 3-2) and 5-2 to IUPUI (6-14, 1-4), on Thursday at North Central High School. The Golden Grizzlies have two matches remaining in the Summit League weekend cluster.
"In our second match, Demi and Grace both played an excellent match at doubles and carried it over into singles play," said Oakland head coach Heather Redshaw. "we really had a shot to win our second match and with a little more fight, effort and smart play we could have done it."
In the match against the Jaguars, Georgakopoulos and Keating combined to win 8-6 at No. 1 doubles. However, IUPUI claimed the other two doubles matches 8-1 and 8-0 respectively to earn a 1-0 lead.
Keating then went on to win 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Georgakopoulos also won 6-2, 6-4 over her opponent at No. 3 singles. Caitlin Young also played a tight match, falling 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
The Jaguars won the remaining three singles matches in straight sets to seal the victory for the hosts.
Against Southern Utah, Oakland won a pair of matches through forfeit, claiming the No. 3 doubles match and also the point at No. 6 singles.
The Golden Grizzlies came close to earning the doubles point, but Brittany Baxter and Caitlin Young fell 8-5 at No. 2 doubles in the closer of the two matches. The Thunderbirds claimed the five remaining singles matches in straight sets.
"Brittany and Caitlin played a solid doubles match and were close right up to the end," said Redshaw. ""Brittany and Grace also battled hard in their singles matches and each game was competitive."
Oakland is back in action on Friday at 9 a.m. The Golden Grizzlies then end the cluster and the season with a match against Western Illinois on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to be played at Park Tudor High School.
"If we all come to play in our last two matches we have a great chance of winning," concluded Redshaw.
